Why nutritional supplements?
No matter how well you think you are doing, today it turns out to be quite difficult to get enough nutrients, also: vitamins and minerals. Even if you stick to the recommended amounts of fruit and vegetables, it remains a task. We explain why that is on the basis of three developments.
- Soil depletion. More and more research shows that our fruit and vegetables no longer contain the same amount of vitamins and minerals as they did 70 years ago. This is the result of soil depletion, also known as soil degradation. Because we have started to use the agricultural land more and more often and we do not give the soil time to recover, we are missing essential vitamins and minerals in the agricultural soil and therefore in our food. Added to this is the (excessive) use of artificial fertilizers, which exhausts the agricultural land. Crop yield takes precedence over soil quality in this development. And you notice this not only by the color of fruit and vegetables. The taste also suffers. The taste is often bland and less intense than it should be. This development is particularly concerning for people on a plant-based diet, as they are comparatively more dependent on fruits and vegetables.
- Use of pesticides. In addition to soil depletion, we also have to deal with the frequent use of pesticides. According to researchers, this also influences the amount of vitamins and minerals that remain after the use of pesticides. These are considerably less. Its use not only has an effect on the vitamins and minerals in fruit and vegetables, but also on human health. For example, pesticides are associated with lower immunity and respiratory problems. Unfortunately, washing fruits and vegetables is usually not enough to get rid of pesticides. This is because these agents can pass through the shell. Organic fruits and vegetables are a better alternative, because no artificial pesticides are used with organic fruit and vegetables.
- Changing diet. Our Western diet has changed considerably in recent decades. We are consuming more and more food that is rich in omega 6. You can find this in vegetable oils, such as sunflower, soybean and corn oil (think of frying fat) and all hardened (hydrogenated) fats from a factory, such as margarines. And vegetable oils seem to be the culprit for many chronic diseases. More and more research shows how vegetable oils cause inflammation in the body, also called inflammation. Although microscopically omega 3 and omega 6 cannot be distinguished from each other, there is indeed a big difference between these fatty acids for our cells. The large amount of omega 6 is very unbalanced compared to our omega 3 intake. This imbalance can be corrected by adding more omega 3 to our diet.
These developments are worrying because they concern health. A vitamin deficiency can creep in slowly, but when it is in it can have nasty consequences. Such a consequence is, for example, that our body receives fewer components that it needs to protect us against chronic diseases.
Basic supplementation
Now that you know why it’s almost impossible to get enough nutrients from fruits and vegetables, we’ll help you on your way to supplementing these deficiencies in a natural and healthy way. There are roughly two vitamins and a mineral that almost everyone lacks because they are no longer sufficient in our fruit and vegetables. These are: vitamin C, vitamin D, and magnesium. To remedy the imbalance of omega 6 and omega 3, omega 3 has also been added to the basic supplement. Below we explain them.
An important antioxidant that protects your body against harmful radicals from the outside. Radicals are aggressive substances that can damage your cells. Think, for example, of (cigarette) smoke and stress. Antioxidants render these substances harmless and help you stay healthy. If you get enough vitamins, your body can better absorb iron from food and you support the immune system. This antioxidant also contributes to the formation of collagen, which is important for blood vessels and smooth veins. It is also an important vitamin for the bones and the production and construction of cartilage (in the joints).
Many people know that vitamin D is important for maintaining strong bones. But did you know that vitamin D also plays a role in maintaining strong and flexible muscles and also contributes to your resistance? Enough reason to make sure you make or get enough of it! There are two types of vitamin D: vitamin D2 and vitamin D3. Both species occur in nature and can therefore be called natural. Yet vitamin D3 is known as the “natural form” of vitamin D because it is made in the body. Goldea’s Vitamin D3 is of 100% vegetable origin.
The fatty acids EPA and DHA together make a positive contribution to the normal functioning of the heart. In addition, DHA plays a role in the functioning of the brain and contributes to the maintenance of normal vision. Most people know omega 3 from fish oil. But did you know that fish themselves do not produce omega 3? They get omega 3 from the algae they eat. So the fish is actually an intermediary. The Vegan Omega 3 from Goldea Health is made on the basis of these algae and is therefore 100% vegetable!
An essential mineral involved in over 600 enzyme-driven biological reactions that take place in the body. Magnesium contributes, among other things, to the reduction of fatigue and to mental resilience and energy. In addition, magnesium is also important for the muscles. Our Power 5 Magnesium supplement contains 5 biological forms of magnesium. We have combined the five organic forms of magnesium bisglycinate, citrate, malate, gluconate and taurate in one supplement because of their specific applications. Biologically bound forms of magnesium are better absorbed by the body.
We have bundled these four supplements in the Daily Essential Pack for convenience!
