The eye

Your eyes consist of the eye wall, cornea, retina, iris, pupil, lens and optic nerve. The outside of your eyeball is covered with conjunctiva. Below that is the white of the eye. At the front of the eye, the white of the eye bulges slightly outwards. This is called the cornea. The cornea allows light to fall on your retina. Behind the cornea is the iris. This gives color to your eye and through your pupil regulates how much light can enter your eye.

Your pupil is an opening for light to pass through. Your eye lens, behind the pupil, bundles the light and the image on the retina, by becoming flat or convex. The light rays that reach the retina are then sent to our brains via electrical signals via the optic nerve.

Tips to keep your eyes healthy

  • Do you do (a lot of) computer work? Then look elsewhere for 20 seconds every 20 minutes. Staring at your computer/screen all day cannot directly damage your eyes, but it can make them dry and tired. This is because we blink less when we are sitting in front of a computer. It is also important that you are not too close to your screen. Keep about 50 to 70 cm.
  • Do you go outside and the sun shines? Wear sunglasses. UV radiation is very harmful to the eye. It can even lead to cataracts and burns on your cornea. When purchasing sunglasses, make sure that they protect against UV-A and UV-B radiation.
  • In case of physical complaints, do not keep walking around with this for too long. With itchy or red eyes you can put a cold washcloth/cotton pad on your eyes or a cold compress. Did dirt get in your eye? Then rinse your eyes well with cooled boiled water. If you continue to suffer from these symptoms, consult a doctor.
  • Remove your make-up every night and use good make-up. And by good makeup, we don’t mean specific brands, but makeup that is past its expiration date. It can contain bacteria that can easily get into your eyes. Also, don’t share your makeup with others. And finally, very important: clean your face every day! Do this both before and after putting on makeup.
  • When wearing contact lenses, it is recommended that you do not wear them for longer than the recommended time. Clean them well and wash your hands before touching your lenses. Swimming and sleeping with contact lenses is also not recommended.
  • Nutrition and supplements. You’ve probably heard it before: Carrots are good for your eyes. And that’s right. It contains a lot of vitamin A, which is good for the health of your eyes. Eating citrus fruits, green vegetables and whole grain products are also good for the eyes. In addition, nutritional supplements can also contribute to maintaining healthy eyes.
